Moving On

Don’t be scared by the title, this site is not going down. I wanted to take some time out of my day to explain to everyone why Raleighite.com hasn’t been really updated lately. I also wanted to share my excitement with the world as I finally take one of those big life steps by starting my career.

In July 2010 I was invited by Dell to attend their Customer Advisory Panel (CAP) event. I got to meet a lot of people who worked in Dell’s social media and started talking to them about a potential position. Social media was something very new in the corporate world, and the department at Dell was considered revolutionary by respected news agencies such as Forbes. I decided on that trip in 2010 I wanted to start a career in social media to help people fix and use their technology. I also decided there would be no better place in the world to do it at than Dell.

The road from getting a position from idea to reality is a very long road in a large corporation. I stayed in touch with my contacts from that day in July 2010 and after months of emails and weathering a very unpredictable market and economy the position was opened up to candidates in December 2011. I nervously went through three interviews on Friday January 14th (yes the unluckiness of the date makes it easy to remember). I was also fortunate enough to have an out pouring of support to my blog’s Facebook page (found here) from friends and family, listeners to my podcast, and members of my World of Warcraft guild.

Social media has proven itself a powerful tool in the past two years. It helped topple the Egyptian government, it sent a certain congressman out of office, it has allowed huge companies to connect to their customers on a 1 on 1 basis, and most importantly to me it helped me land my dream job.

Today I will be starting on my journey to my new home in Austin, TX. I will first travel to Birmingham, AL, then drive till I can’t anymore and stop for another night, and then finally arrive in Austin, TX on Tuesday morning. If you’d like to follow my trip please check out my facebook page for a link to my Glimpse which will show you where I’m at in real time. The links expire every 4 hours so I’ll try to keep them updated.

Also you can check my route here.

Till I get to Austin thank you everyone for you understanding. I promise once I’m setup the podcast and blog will be getting updated frequently.
